Michigan State University and the city of East Lansing (EL) partner in many ways to strengthen our community. The following is a compilation of some of the ways that community members, students, faculty, and staff, as well as the city and the university, work together:
- EL pledged $50,000 to support the new Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum and challenged the Friends of the Museum to raise a similar amount from East Lansing residents. In addition, the city created a $50,000 fund to support art-related businesses near the museum.
- The East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) and MSU Department of Police and Public Safety collaborated to create the Community Emergency Response Team, which trains both university and community members in disaster response protocol.
- MSU worked with EL toward the development and implementation of the East Village master plan.
- EL hired an MSU graduate intern to work on coordinating the East Village development project.
-
Active Living For Adults (ALFA) provides services to MSU employees as well as others throughout the region. MSU makes a financial contribution to this program.
-
Revenue-sharing money from the state is appropriated to municipalities based on population. EL’s allocation takes into account its large student population.
-
MSU and EL continue to work together on regional initiatives for economic development, including the development of the Lansing Regional SmartZone.
-
Spartan Youth Programs hold a variety of precollege programs for local prekindergarteners through 12th graders.
-
EL and MSU have collaborated to promote housing options in East Lansing for university employees and graduate students.
- Through MSU’s Center for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement, many students become involved in such senior centers as ALFA, Whitehills Health Care Center, Burcham Hills Retirement Community, and East Lansing Health Care Center.
